about

Timeline is a reflection piece on missing time phenomenon, where individuals experience periods of existence that they cannot account for. It seemed appropriate to the dark wintery time period during which it was recorded.

Rather than my usual method of manually playing a rhythm and layering individual parts on top of that, I programmed step pieces in a software sequencer, then exported the MIDI data into a DAW where the steps could be assigned to various samples which I processed heavily through filters to achieve metallic or wooden tones. While it seems rather tuneless at first listen, I spent some time playing the parts against each other and think I achieved a piece where the individual components "talk" to each other.

The noise generation is actually a recorded cymbal pushed through an envelope generator to create an explosive "radio static" sound. Additionally, I used a combination of sampled sounds from a Roland System 100 played on a keyboard at various intervals, and the wonderful Absynth from Native Instruments.
